Greeting from the Chairman

The ACEC Small Firm Council (SFC) and its members are on the forefront in identifying and resolving major issues that affect small business concerns across the country. It is the sincere goal of the Small Firm Council to positively support and represent on an ongoing basis, the many excellent firms that lend us their support.

We offer a yearly meeting and seminar that takes place in a different part of the country every year. These seminars typically revolve around the "business" of running an engineering business. We also offer Small Firm CEO/Principal roundtables during the national ACEC conferences. During these roundtables, business owners from around the country can brainstorm, as well as share ideas/concerns/issues that affect small businesses today. The SFC is a valuable tool for any small business looking to strengthen their business practices.

Small businesses often face the same types of issues as their larger counterparts, and although the scale of the challenges may be different, the concentration of effects can be disproportionately severe. One major issue that needs our special emphasis relates to what is referred to as the "Entrepreneurial Myth (E-Myth)." This is the assumption that an expert in a given technical field will also be an expert at running that kind of business. In other words: Just because you're a good engineer doesn't mean you're a good business person! Additional skills are needed to keep a business running smoothly. Not only management skills, but finance, human resources, information technology, risk management and many more "business" skills are required to run a successful business.

This is where SFC shines! By instructing private practice engineering firm owners, who are almost always engineers, in the essentials of managing a viable business, ACEC SFC provides an invaluable service to the industry.

So, whether you are a new owner, or a seasoned entrepreneur; a firm of three or a company of three hundred; ACEC SFC can help hone your small business practices to become a better business.
