Spouse / Guest Activities

Spouse/guests must register for the convention in order to participate in any tour or activity. Tours subject to cancellation if minimums are not met. All events take place rain or shine. Comfortable shoes and light sweater are recommended. All tours depart from the 11th Street Exit of the Grand Hyatt Hotel.


SUNDAY, APRIL 27
Tour #1 - Hillwood Museum & Gardens Tour
Hillwood1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Bus departs at 1 pm)
Cost: $90

Enjoy strolling through the 25-acre estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post, known as one of America's first businesswomen. Ms. Post purchased the estate in 1955 and expanded the mansion and refurbished the grounds with the help of Perry Wheeler, noted horticulturist who helped design and establish the White House Rose Gardens. Walk along the gorgeous lawns, gardens, and paths. Then tour the Hillwood Museum, which houses an extensive collection of fine French and Russian art. Make sure to bring your camera as the gardens will be flourishing from the April showers!


"Primary Season" Reception and Dinner

Experience the excitement of a national political convention at this specially themed dinner complete with patriotic bunting, state buttons and placards. Dinner includes musical entertainment and special political guests straight from the campaign trail.


MONDAY, APRIL 28
Spouse Breakfast & Hollywood in Washington Tour

Join registered spouses and guests for a hearty breakfast to start off your morning. No formal program is planned so you will have time to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and plan your week events! Be sure you wear your comfortable shoes. After breakfast the group will depart for the Hollywood in Washington Tour! Board our motor coach and hear tales of tinsel town in Washington. You will visit sites where popular films and television shows such as Forrest Gump, Wedding Crashers, Independence Day, No Way Out, the X-files, and the West Wing were shot on location. You will also see the sites in such classic films as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and All the Presidents Men. After the tour around Washington, you will head to the newly opened Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. View exhibits such as "Behind the Scenes" to discover how Madame Tussaud creates the wax figures, "sit" at the presidents desk in the oval office, have a fireside chat with FDR, listen to Martin Luther King, Jr deliver his "I have a dream speech" from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or take a picture with Hollywood Celebrities. Following the tour of the wax museum, enjoy lunch at Clyde's of Gallery Place, located in the heart of revitalized Penn Quarter/Chinatown. Be sure to bring your camera for many photo opportunities on our stops! RSVPs required for seating.


PAC Evening at the International Spy Museum

Cost: $185 per ticket or two for $300; Limited to 200 people

Guests will find themselves surrounded by intrigue and espionage as the Spy Museum is opened exclusively to ACEC members. Enjoy a self-guided tour of some of the most secret spy missions in the world, where you never know who may be lurking around the corner. After the tour, guests will be taken to a secret room where they will enjoy cocktails and gourmet food.

Tour #2 - Tour, Lunch, & Shopping in Georgetown

Today, you will explore Washington's most famous neighborhood, Georgetown. You will travel along the bricked path of Georgetown's C&O Canal as your tour guide gives you a little taste of Georgetown's history. After stopping by to view The Old Stone House, located in the heart of Georgetown's shopping district, enjoy lunch. Lunch will be served at Filomena's, a beautiful Italian home-style restaurant, where you can watch "mamas" make pasta from scratch. Following lunch, plenty of time will be provided to explore the shops of modern day Georgetown.


Tour #3 - National Cathedral Tour & Tea

Enjoy this leisurely afternoon experience. Today you'll tour Washington's National Cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the United States. Your docent will show you the Cathedral's intricate carvings, more than 200 breathtaking stained glass windows and even delicate and colorful needlework. The Cathedral, sometimes called a "symphony in stone," has been the location of many significant events, including the funeral services of Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan. The pulpit was the last one from which Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke. You'll top off your tour with an ascent to the Pilgrim Observation Gallery, where you can relax over tea and refreshments and glimpse the city from its highest point.


Engineering Excellence Awards Gala

$250 per person

This black-tie event brings together business leaders, members of Congress, Cabinet members and the media to celebrate outstanding engineering achievements by ACEC member firms during the past year. Celebrity host Ross Shafer will serve as the event's Master of Ceremonies.
