Fulbright Awards Available…
Even for Engineers

The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering lecturing/research awards in 140 countries for the 2002-2003 academic year. Some 99 of these prestigious awards are in the field of Engineering. Fulbright opportunities are available not only for college and university faculty and administrators, but also for professionals from business and government, as well as independent scholars and many others.

Eligibility criteria include U.S. citizenship, a Master's or Ph.D., and college or university teaching experience at the level and in the field of the specific award. Traditional Fulbright awards are available from two months to an academic year or longer. A new short-term grants program-the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program- offers two-to-six-week grants in a variety of disciplines and fields. While foreign language skills are needed in some countries, most Fulbright lecturing assignments are in English. Some 80 percent of the awards are for lecturing.

Application deadlines for 2002-2003 awards are:

August 1, 2001, for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide
November 1, 2001, for spring/summer seminars in Germany, Korea, and Japan for international educators and academic administrators and for the summer German Studies Seminar
Rolling deadline for Fulbright Senior Specialists Program

SEI Panelists Divulge Program Secrets

Four Senior Executives Institute (SEI) executives are hosting a roundtable on May 15 during ACEC's Convention in San Antonio. The panelists represent CA, TN, and TX; firm sizes range from 30 to over 400 employees; and technical and non-technical leaders.

The program promises to be valuable, judging from the fact that last year's panelists were bombarded with questions such as: How does SEI compare to an MBA or Executive program? What is your perspective on creating a leadership cadre? What were your colleagues' expectations when you returned from SEI? What is the best age range and firm position for someone to participate in and benefit from SEI? How did your firm handle the specter of "coronation" for the individual sent to SEI? How did your firm handle the time and financial commitment of SEI?

The ACEC Senior Executives Institute is a comprehensive leadership program for design professionals. Only 11 seats are remaining in SEI Class VI, which starts October 13-18, 2001 in Washington, DC. Click here for details and registration. For more information on ACEC's Convention in San Antonio, visit http://www.acec.org/Events/sanantdefault.htm.

Over $40,000 Available to SEI Class VI Firms

CNA/Schinnerer, DPIC Companies, RA&MCO Insurance Services and Terra Insurance Company are continuing to provide financial support to policyholders participating in The ACEC Senior Executives Institute (SEI). "We believe the Institute provides a tremendous opportunity for executives of design firms to enhance their leadership, management and business skills," notes Thomas A. Porterfield, Jr., Vice President of Victor O. Schinnerer & Company, Inc. Limited fellowships and scholarships are quickly being reserved, with over half of the 26 seats in SEI Class VI already reserved. Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth

Having failed to make the necessary steps to meet current energy needs, the United States is in need of a coherent and comprehensive energy policy to ensure that the nation has reliable and affordable energy resources to meet our future needs, according to The Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth. ACEC is a member of the alliance.

The nation is experiencing rolling blackouts, spiking natural gas prices, escalating electricity costs, and higher prices at the gasoline pumps. And, demand for raw energy resources is growing, says the alliance. In the next two decades, the United States wiill need:

• 31 percent more petroleum;
• 62 percent more natural gas;
• 22 percent more coal;
• 45 percent more electricity; and
• 26 percent more renewable energy resources.

Not only has it been more than 25 years since a major new petroleum refinery has been constructed in the country, but in the last two decades, half of all existing refineries have closed. America's dependence on foreign oil is growing: In 1973, we imported 36 percent of our oil; currently, 56 percent of our oil is imported; and by 2020, it is estimated that more than 65 percent will be imported. More than 1,300 new power plants will be needed by 2020. U.S. demand for electricity is growing by 10,000 megawatts per year, but only about 8,000 megawatts of capacity are being added annually.

The Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth will seek to provide a united voice in support of a national energy policy necessary for economic growth and environmental progress. For more information, contact Bo Choi at AEEG: 1615 H St., NW, Washington, DC 20062, 202-463-5533.

What Kind of Review Does Your Firm Need?

ACEC’s Peer Review Program is co-sponsoring the Internal versus External Peer Review Session in San Antonio. The four-person panel will consist of firms that either conduct their own internal reviews, are involved with ISO 9000 reviews, or participate in the ACEC Peer Review Program. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of review? What would work best for your firm? Case studies that demonstrate potential strengths and weaknesses in your firm will give you answers on how you might resolve these issues. Join us on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 from 10:15 to 11:45 to get answers to these questions and more.
