ACEC Invited By White House To Witness President Sign Transportation Bill Into Law

President Bush signed the $286.4 billion transportation authorization bill into law on Wednesday at a Caterpillar plant in Montgomery, Illinois House Speaker Dennis Hastert's districtwith several ACEC members in attendance.
ACEC was invited by the White House to attend the signing ceremony, and was represented by ACEC/Illinois including: President Don Rutledge, Past President Chris Burke, Transportation Committee Chairman Pete Mesha, Transportation for Illinois Coalition Representative Kirk Brown, and Executive Director David E. Kennedy.
"It was a fantastic event culminating a long battle to get this bill passed," said Kennedy. "Illinois and all states will benefit from the increased transportation spending."
President Bush told the audience: "I'm proud to be here to sign this transportation bill because our economy depends on us having the most efficient, reliable transportation system in the world."
ACEC worked hard over the past two years to gain passage of this important legislation.

Gen. McCaffrey To Bring Insider View Of Iraq War To Fall Conference

General Barry McCaffrey, one of our nation's most highly decorated generalsand popular national security analyst for NBC Newswill be the keynote luncheon speaker at ACEC's Fall Conference in Walt Disney World® Resort, Florida on September 22.
McCaffrey conducted a five-day visit to Kuwait and Iraq in June, and then presented his findings in July to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
McCaffrey led the 24th Infantry Division in Desert Storm, and served as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command. He twice received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest medal for valor, as well as two Silver Stars and three Purple Hearts for wounds in combat. Upon retirement as the Army's most highly decorated four-star general, he served as director of the White House Office of National Drug Policy.
Now a chairman of HNTB Federal Services Corporation, McCaffrey remains a frequent "expert" commentator in the media. He will address ACEC members on leadership challenges in the 21st century and what it takes to face the dangers and opportunities in the world today.

ACEC Briefs Oregon Congressman Blumenauer On Environmental Priorities At Portland Meeting
Members of ACEC's Environmental Business Committee met with Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) in Portland this week to discuss key legislative and environmental priorities.
Committee members emphasized the importance of WRDA passage, water infrastructure funding, environmental cleanup at DoD sites, and introduced the Congressman to Engineers Without Borders-USA.
A former utilities director in Portland, Blumenauer expressed keen interest in working with ACEC while emphasizing the importance of the engineering industry to many issues before Congress.
"It was an excellent face-to-face discussion with the Congressman on some key issues important to our members," said Jeff Daggett, ACEC chair-elect and member of the committee "It's vital that we continue to connect with legislators to ensure our industry priorities move forward."
While in Portland, the committee also met with Doug Clarke, chief of programs and project management for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Portland Division, as well as officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality, and Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services.

A/E Job Openings Now Available On ACEC's Website
In response to requests from several members, ACEC has added a searchable job board to its website for positions available in the A/E industry.
Now A/E firms can post their openings for engineering and other jobs on the website which receives nearly two million hits each month. Job seekers can easily navigate the postings to find appropriate openings.
Advertising rates for member firms are $200 for a 30-day listing, with discounts available for multiple listings. Non-member rates are higher. Job seekers can browse the listings for free.
