CASE Convocation To Address BIM, Condos and Profits
October 19-20
San Francisco
How does a firm take on more work yet still and maintain control, or manage a risky but potentially very lucrative project?
The answers to these and many more management issues will be discussed at the 3rd annual CASE Convocation, October 19-20 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
This day-and-a half program will address the most current and important structural engineering issues such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), where attendees will learn about BIM advantages and shortcomings. Other topics include how to tell the difference between a "risky project" and one that promises opportunity and profits; and how to negotiate the removal of bad contract language.
The overriding theme of the conference is how to minimize risk and maximize profit.
The cost is $295 before October 5, $349 after. Participants may earn up to 10 professional development hours.

ACEC Applauds Nomination of Mary Peters to Transportation Secretary Post
Former FHWA Administrator Mary Peters Nominated for Transportation Secretary |
Mary Peters, a strong advocate of transportation infrastructure and a longtime ally of ACEC, has been nominated by President Bush to be the nation's new Secretary of Transportation.
ACEC President Dave Raymond said “Mary Peters is a great friend of our industry and has the passion and experience to tackle the difficult problems facing our nation’s transportation system.”
When confirmed by the Senate, Peters, the former Federal Highway Administrator, will succeed Norman Mineta, who retired from the Cabinet position in July. Mineta will receive ACEC's Distinguished Award of Merit at the Fall Conference in Charleston, S.C.
An Arizona native, Peters was a featured speaker at the ACEC 2003 Fall Conference in Phoenix. During her tenure at FHWA she worked with ACEC on a number of important transportation issues, including the effort against "reverse auctions" for federally-aided highway projects in Minnesota and elsewhere.
Peters spend three years directing the Arizona Department of Transportation after a 15-year career with the agency. She was appointed to head FHWA in 2001, and worked closely with ACEC and other industry organizations during the development and consideration of SAFETEA LU. After leaving FHWA in November of 2005, Peters joined the Phoenix office of HDR Inc., an ACEC-member firm.
Standing alongside the president at Tuesday's news conference announcing her appointment Peters said: "We are experiencing increasing congestion on our nation's highways, railways, airports, and seaports, and we're robbing our nation of productivity and our citizens of quality time with their families. In some cases, this is the result of systems and structures that are more suited to a bygone era than to the 21st century."
The Peters nomination now goes before the Senate for confirmation.
ACEC President Dave Raymond and other association executives discussed the nomination at a meeting this week with senior White House policy staff. (See article below). |

White House Briefs ACEC, Industry Organizations on Fall Legislative Agenda
The war on terror, congressional appropriations, and the nomination of Mary Peters for Transportation Secretary were among the issues discussed at a White House meeting this week attended by ACEC President Dave Raymond and other industry executives.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove led the discussion, along with chief White House congressional lobbyist Candida Wollf and other senior policy staff.
The Senate is currently scheduled to begin the confirmation process of Peters on September 20. The former Federal Highway Administration chief is expected to receive strong support from members of both parties.
The Administration is also urging Congress to complete work on a tax package that includes permanent reductions in the so-called "death tax." ACEC was actively involved in passing legislation in 2001 that phased the tax down to zero by 2010, but budget constraints prevented making the phase-out permanent.
The House has already passed compromise legislation that ensures that most family-owned businesses are protected after 2010, but the package, which also includes other tax provisions and an increase in the minimum wage, is awaiting final consideration in the Senate.
Funding bills for the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security are also key objectives before the congressional recess. Congress is expected to go back into session after Election Day to complete work on the remaining spending bills.
"We were pleased to hear the emphasis on finishing the spending measures that fund infrastructure and other programs of interest to our members," said Raymond, "as well as the renewed emphasis on the death tax. We also reminded them of the importance of completing work on the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which is critical for moving ahead with new Corps of Engineers projects around the country." |
