ACEC/PAC Completes Banner Year;
MOs On March To $1 Million PAC

With a heated national election campaign and upcoming state races upon us, record ACEC/PAC fundraising has positioned ACEC to effectively weigh-in on behalf of the engineering industry.

Propelled by a strong year-end finish, ACEC/PAC raised over $550,000 in 2007, eclipsing the previous record of $440,000 set in 2006. While contributions are still being processed, 33 states hit their PAC fundraising targets by the end of the year, up from 27 in 2006.

"We're achieving this success because more ACEC members than ever before are stepping up to support our political program," said ACEC President Dave Raymond, adding that "these fundraising totals send a strong message that our industry is playing to win."

New Mexico, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Indiana and Connecticut Score Gold (Again)

ACEC/Massachusetts President Robin Greenleaf
Late season fundraising drives in ACEC/New Mexico, ACEC/Massachusetts, ACEC/Mississippi, ACEC/Indiana, and ACEC/Connecticut scored top honors again.

In Massachusetts, MO President Robin S. Greenleaf of Architectural Engineers, Inc. worked closely with PAC Champions Bob Vokes of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. and Mike Hanlon of Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc., along with Executive Director Abbie Goodman to push the Bay State over the goal line.

ACEC/PAC Champion of Mississippi Charles Williford
"The business case for ACEC/PAC is very clear," said Greenleaf. "A modest investment nets strong returns in terms of better national policies and a better business environment for the industry. I am very proud of how my Massachusetts members recognized the importance of meeting our goal."

Charles Williford of Williford, Gearhart & Knight, Inc. in Mississippi echoed this theme. "ACEC/PAC is one of the tools the industry uses to shape policy on a national scale. It offers an easy way for every firm, regardless of size, to participate and make a difference." Williford credited the strong support from ACEC/MS President Larry Cooley and the assistance of Executive Director Judy Adams in helping the state to achieve its goal once again this year, and added that the strategic decision by ACEC to place more emphasis on the PAC was critical to their success.

ACEC/PAC Champion of Indiana Phil Beer
ACEC/Indiana has met its PAC goal every year since goals were established. "Our members understand the importance of political engagement," said ACEC/PAC Champion Phil Beer II of USI Consultants, Inc. Added Executive Director Stephanie Morse: "This is something our leadership takes very seriously—supporting the PAC is one of the key actions we undertake every year to promote a strong business environment for our members."

In addition to promoting industry priorities, Tom Ahneman of Ahneman Kirby, LLC in Connecticut

ACEC/PAC Champion of Connecticut Tom Ahneman
sees ACEC/PAC as a needed bulwark against bad policies and threats to the industry. "It's in some ways an insurance policy," said Ahneman, "giving us the collective means to put the right people in office who will stand up for the industry when threats arise."

ACEC/New Mexico Executive Director Diane Snyder is also a state senator and knows firsthand the importance of political advocacy by organizations like ACEC. "Supporting good policies in the legislature is easy—running for re-election is not," said Snyder. "That's why it's so important for ACEC to have a mechanism to help good people get

ACEC/New Mexico Executive Director Diane Snyder
elected and stay elected at the national level."

Snyder credits the support and leadership of President Scott Perkins of Wilson & Company and National Director Kent Freier of Molzen-Corbin & Associates as critical in organizing the strong support from New Mexico members.

For more information about ACEC/PAC and how to contribute, contact ACEC's Executive Director of Political Affairs, Greg Knopp at 202-347-7474 or gknopp@acec.org.
