South Carolina Hits ACEC/PAC Target Four Years In A Row

M.L. Love Jr., S.C. PAC Champion
ACEC/South Carolina this week achieved its 2008 ACEC/PAC fundraising target, the fourth straight year that the Palmetto State has crossed the goal line.

They also become the seventh state to hit their goal this year, joining Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Metro Washington and Montana.

“It’s just a matter of educating our members in South Carolina about the impressive legislative accomplishments of ACEC on the federal level,” said South Carolina PAC Champion M.L. Love Jr. of Collins Engineers in Charleston. “Once you communicate that, most people understand the need to invest in the political programs that help us promote our interests on Capitol Hill.”

ACEC/SC State Executive Joe Jones, III echoed Love’s assessment. “If you look at the kinds of issues we have before Congress right now: the 3% withholding mandate, major water infrastructure legislation, an aviation reauthorization bill, funding for surface transportation projects—to name just a few—it's obvious that engineers have a strong vested interest in supporting ACEC’s advocacy efforts, including the PAC. We’ll continue to spread the word that every ACEC member in the state benefits from this effort, and that’s why we need every member to get involved.”

ACEC/NH Takes Seat on Two New State Commissions

In recognition of ACEC/New Hampshire’s support and member expertise, the New Hampshire legislature has appointed the Member Organization as a sitting member on two new state commissions studying land use and stormwater regulations.

“Our association testified in support of both bills that created these commissions,” said ACEC/NH Executive Director Alex Koutroubas. “This will be a good opportunity for our organization to both share our expertise and express industry views on a statewide level.”

Both the Statewide Study of Stormwater Regulations and the Statewide Land Use Regulations commissions will begin meeting at the end of the summer. They will produce their recommendations by November 1, 2009.

Member Firm CEO Gets Surprise Visit From Obama At Girls School Ceremony

ACEC Member Firm CEO Deborah Sawyer greets Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) at the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago commencement ceremony.
Deborah Sawyer couldn’t have been more surprised to see Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama cross the stage to her.

Sawyer, who is president/CEO of ACEC Member Firm Environmental Design International Inc. in Chicago, also serves as Chairman of the Board at the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School.

She was leading the Chicago school’s commencement ceremony when the presumptive Democratic nominee entered stage left.

“He was speaking next door,” said Sawyer. “One of our teachers who knew him arranged for him to make the appearance.”

The Young Women’s Leadership Charter School is a public charter school for inner-city girls. Forty percent of the students are homeless, yet 100 percent of this year’s senior class has been accepted to college.

Congress Extends FAA Funding; Falls Short In Addressing Highway Trust Fund

Congress cleared legislation that extends funding authority for airport construction and other programs run by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The legislation fell short, however, in adding funding to prevent cuts to state highway programs in 2009.

ACEC and industry allies had advocated adding a highway funding provision to H.R. 6327, which extends FAA funding and program authority through September 30, 2008. By restoring the $8 billion to the Highway Trust Fund that was transferred to the General Fund in 1998, Congress would head off a deficit in the Trust Fund that could trigger cuts to state transportation programs of 34 percent in Fiscal Year 2009.

Opposition from House Budget and Appropriations Committee Republicans, as well as a handful of Senators, forced the provision out of the bill.

ACEC and industry groups are evaluating other legislative options for addressing the Highway Trust Fund shortfall in the coming months.
