| Cirque Performers To Highlight Local Color Night At Fall Conference In Montreal
Local Color Night will feature a performance by cirque entertainers atop Montreal’s tallest building. |
Numerous sightseeing events, golf at a world class championship course, and cirque entertainment highlight social activities in store for attendees at the upcoming ACEC 2008 Fall Conference in Montreal, October 19-22.
The popular Local Color Night event will take place at the Club Altitude 737 restaurant, located on the top floor of Montreal’s tallest building. Festivities will include a gourmet dinner accented by legendary cirque performers throughout the evening.
The Fall Conference also offers several city tours including: Best of Montreal Tour, which visits many of the city’s must-see sites; the La Sucrerie de La Montagne (Sugar Shack) Tour, to experience a working maple syrup producer and hear traditions of early pioneers; and the Culinary and Wine Adventure, where participants can sample foods and wines of Montreal’s ethnic neighborhoods.
Another Conference highlight is the annual ACEC/PAC Golf Tournament, which will be held at Club de Golf Islesmere, a past home to the Canadian PGA Championship.
Following the Conference, a walking or riding tour of Quebec City, which is celebrating its 400-year anniversary, will be available.
The internationally renowned Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in downtown Montreal is the Conference site. Attendees are encouraged to register early as the ACEC room block is filling up fast.

| ACEC Members Put ACEC/PAC To Work In New York, Minnesota, Texas
ACEC members are taking advantage of the August congressional recess to host several fundraisers for key House members throughout the nation, including recent events in New York, Minnesota and Texas.
New York
ACEC/New York hosted a fundraiser earlier this week for new Rep. Mike Arcuri (D-NY), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The New York lawmaker spoke at length about the infrastructure needs facing his district and nationwide and pledged to work with ACEC as Congress begins to reauthorize SAFETEA-LU in 2009.
“Mike represents a new generation in Congress that really understands the critical link between investing in infrastructure and economic growth,” said ACEC/New York President Del Dausman of C&S Engineers. “Our event presented a great opportunity to build a relationship with a future leader in Congress.”
Minnesota

ACEC/Minnesota sponsored an event in Duluth last week for House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar.
“Jim continues to be a major advocate for infrastructure investment in this country,” said Bill Bennett of LHB, Inc. in Duluth, who worked closely with other members of ACEC/Minnesota to organize the event. “He’s also a strong supporter of the industry, and we’re happy to support him once again.”
Texas
ACEC/PAC Champion Don Durden of Civil Engineering Consultants in San Antonio helped organize events for two Texas House members, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX).
The event for Poe, who also is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, was hosted by Jim Thompson, the state organization’s vice chairman for legislative affairs. The event for Cuellar, who is a rising star on several House committees including the Small Business and Homeland Security committees, was co-hosted by Dan Leyendecker, Jeff Puig, Jesse Covarrubias, and ACEC/PAC.
“This was a good opportunity to use ACEC/PAC and the collective resources of our Texas members to support two good people in Congress,” said Durden.

| ACEC Environment And Energy Meeting Targets Midwest Issues, Opportunities
Great Lakes and Midwestern energy and environmental issues were the focus of a recent ACEC Environment and Energy Committee meeting in Chicago that included several federal and private sector experts.
Chris Choi of the Environmental Protection Agency outlined the importance of “integrated design” in developing buildings that can reduce carbon emissions while saving clients money and time. Tim Eder of the Great Lakes Commission reviewed key sustainability concepts that underlie the U.S.-Canada water management compact.
The meeting also included Chris Arman, deputy director of Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, who briefed members on the plan to make O’Hare a “green” airport as it expands and modernizes. The project has produced a sustainable design manual that is being touted as a model for other airport upgrades throughout the country.
A presentation on the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) by Steve McComb, a CCX economist, prompted enthusiastic discussion among committee members anxious to explore the market potential for CCX project development. “CCX is buying and selling carbon credits, thereby creating new markets for energy efficiency and carbon reduction projects nationwide,” said McComb.
“Once again the committee has presented an excellent educational program for member companies,” said Committee Chairman Mike Cline, of Hannum, Wagle & Cline. “In addition to learning about key federal advocacy issues, these meetings give us a taste of what’s happening at the state and local level that can affect our businesses.”
For more information on this meeting, or to join the Environment and Energy Committee, contact Diane Shea, director of environmental & energy program advocacy at 202-347-7474 or dshea@acec.org.
