Cirque Performers To Greet Local Color Night Attendees At Fall Conference

Local Color Night will feature a performance by cirque entertainers at Le Windsor Ballroom.
The popular Local Color Night event at the upcoming Fall Conference in Montreal, October 19-22, will take place at the renowned Le Windsor Ballroom, just a few steps from the Conference hotel—Le Centre Sheraton Montreal, and will feature the "incredible acrobatic artistry" of Montreal cirque performers.

Built in 1878, Le Grand Windsor Ballroom was considered the "Palace of Canada." Its spectacular ballrooms have been host to numerous world dignitaries such as Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

Local Color Night will be held 6:00-9:00 p.m. Monday, October 20, and includes a gourmet dinner in addition to the cirque performers.

If you have not reserved a room for the Fall Conference, call Le Centre Sheraton Montreal directly at 514-878-2000 and ask for in-house reservations; then request the "American Council of Engineering Companies" group rate.

As you know, ACEC changed the venue of the Conference from the Fairmont to Le Centre Sheraton Montreal because of a labor strike.

If you have any further questions, contact Krysta Perrault of ACEC's Meetings Department, at kperrault@acec.org or 202-682-4353.

Two ACEC Nominees Selected For National Committee On Levee Safety

Two ACEC nominees—Don Basham of Stantec and Dr. Les Harder of HDR—were selected recently to serve as the two private sector members on a national panel charged with developing safety policies for the nation's levees.

Basham is Stantec's senior consultant and advisor on water resources specializing in levees and dams. He previously served as Chief of Engineering and Construction with the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

Harder is HDR's senior water policy technical advisor, who previously held leadership positions with the California Department of Water Resources.

A provision in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2007, required the Corps to develop a national levee safety and inspection program and create the National Committee on Levee Safety.

A key objective of ACEC during this effort is to prevent unreasonable liability for those who perform levee safety assessments.

"We were very pleased to have the opportunity to select two such highly qualified and well-respected professionals from the private sector as Don Basham and Les Harder for the National Committee on Levee Safety," said Eric Halpin, committee vice chairman and special assistant for dam and levee safety at the Corps.

ACEC's Gregs Thomopulos Named
President-Elect Of FIDIC

ACEC Senior Vice Chairman Gregs Thomopulos.
ACEC Senior Vice Chairman Gregs Thomopulos has been elected President-elect of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), the worldwide organization representing the consulting engineering industry.

Thomopulos, who is chairman and CEO of Stanley Consultants, Inc. in Muscatine, Iowa, will assume the FIDIC presidency in September, 2009. FIDIC's membership includes associations from 75 countries including ACEC, the largest member.

Thomopulos has been on the executive committee of FIDIC since 2004, and will be the fourth American to serve as FIDIC president following Bill Moore (Dames & Moore), 1970-72; Wilson Binger (TAMS), 1981-83; and Bill Lewis (ASL Consulting Engineers), 1995-97. All three are former ACEC Chairmen.

"As the global voice of the engineering industry, FIDIC has taken the lead in advocating the use of QBS by foreign governments and the multi-lateral development banks," said Thomopulos. "In my leadership role in FIDIC, I plan to continue working on acceptance of QBS and to make advocacy a top issue in the same manner that ACEC has been so effective in the U.S."

"Since ACEC joined FIDIC almost 50 years ago, we have used the organization to establish best practices in the international market," said ACEC President Dave Raymond. "Gregs Thomopulos' ascension to the FIDIC presidency will give us new opportunities in this important organization."

ACEC Launches New Political Site To Promote Election Involvement

ACEC has created a new comprehensive and interactive website—the ACEC Political Action Center—to help members become more informed and engaged in the election process.

Linked to the ACEC home page, the new website offers a variety of information and links on voter registration, up-to-date status on congressional races, and early voting deadlines. The website also has links to the ACEC Advocacy site for current Legislative Alerts and Calls for Action, political news and ACEC/PAC information.

"Our goal is to provide another tool to help educate ACEC members on both political and legislative issues, and then encourage them to make informed judgments on Election Day," said ACEC President Dave Raymond. "Elections this fall—whether at the local, state, or national level—will be determined by turnout, and we want to make sure the voices of ACEC members are heard loud and clear November 4."

Raymond also pointed out that more than a third of the electorate is expected to exercise their right to vote before Election Day this year through early voting, which opens in many states this week. The ACEC Political Action Center provides key information on how to obtain early voting materials and where to return completed ballots.

State Organizations are encouraged to provide their own links to ACEC’s new political website to help further engage their members in the political process.

Click here to access the ACEC Political Action Center. For more information about ACEC's political activities, or ACEC/PAC, contact Greg Knopp, gknopp@acec.org or Elizabeth Coit, ecoit@acec.org.
