Obama Advisor Meets With Association Leaders To Discuss Health Care Challenges

David Cutler (second from left), health care advisor to Senator Barack Obama, talks with trade association leaders at ACEC headquarters this week. Also pictured are Republican Political Consultant Wayne Vallis, left, ACEC President Dave Raymond (second from right) and Aluminum Association President Stephen Larkin.

David Cutler, health care advisor for presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, was a special guest of the Trade Association Liaison Council (TALC), comprised of leading association heads, at a meeting hosted at ACEC this week.

TALC—which includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, and the American Petroleum Institute among others—is meeting with officials from both presidential campaigns to discuss key business issues.

Cutler is professor of economics at Harvard University and author of Your Money or Your Life: Strong Medicine for America's Heath Care System.

ACEC/South Carolina Leaders Show Support For Senator Lindsey Graham

Pictured from the left are ACEC/South Carolina Secretary/Treasurer Jim O'Connor of Collins Engineers, Inc.; Senator Graham; ACEC/PAC Champion M.L. Love of Collins Engineers, Inc. and ACEC/South Carolina President-elect Larry Hargrove of Life Cycle Engineering, Inc.

ACEC/South Carolina leaders are supporting U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham in his re-election effort and met with the senator recently to make a financial contribution from ACEC/PAC.

Graham currently serves on five Senate committees including the Agriculture and Budget committees. He worked closely with the Council in recent years on reforms to the Fair Labor Standards Act to protect engineering firms from unfair lawsuits, and continues to be a reliable supporter in Congress on issues affecting the industry.

ACEC Seeks To Shape New Engineering Student Loan Forgiveness Program

ACEC made several recommendations to the U.S. Department of Education this week regarding implementation of the new ACEC-backed student loan forgiveness program.

The Department is developing regulations to define program eligibility and other criteria. To view ACEC's comments, click here.

Under the Higher Education Reauthorization and College Opportunity Act of 2008, individuals who are employed full-time in an area of national need, including engineering, will be eligible for up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness.

The new program is modeled on legislation that ACEC helped draft in 2007 with Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver (D-MO) designed to create a comprehensive loan forgiveness program at the federal level to encourage more young people to pursue engineering degrees.

ACEC's comments raise a number of pertinent issues, including the proper definition of an engineer, and the role engineering companies will play in certifying that an individual is working as an engineer.

Following the evaluation of comments from ACEC and other organizations, the department will establish a "negotiated rulemaking committee" charged with drafting the actual regulations to implement the program.

For more information on the new program, contact Katharine Mottley, ACEC director of tax and regulatory affairs at kmottley@acec.org.

Montreal Conference Set To Begin; ACEC/PAC Sponsorships Still Available

More than 700 ACEC members and guests have registered so far for the 2008 Fall Conference, which begins on Sunday, October 19, at Le Centre Sheraton Hotel in downtown Montreal.

The Fall Conference features over 40 educational sessions focusing on critical aspects of business practice, and a stellar lineup of speakers that includes legendary explorer Robert Ballard and noted FOX News political analyst Morton Kondracke.

The Conference also includes two ACEC/PAC events—a golf tournament and reception at the historic Club de Golf Islesmeres (home of several Canadian Tour events, including two Canadian PGA Championships), and the $10,000 Sweepstakes Drawing.

Members can support ACEC/PAC and ultimately ACEC's advocacy efforts by becoming a sponsor for one of these exciting ACEC/PAC activities. Sponsorships help underwrite the cost of ACEC/PAC events and ensure that every dollar raised goes to pro-business political candidates. Unlike direct contributions to ACEC/PAC, ACEC members can use corporate funds to underwrite ACEC/PAC event sponsorship.

Current ACEC/PAC Fall Conference sponsors include Lockton Companies (Gold), Degenkolb Engineers (Silver), Pennoni Associates, Inc. (Silver), Bills Engineering (Hole Sponsor), C& S Companies (Hole Sponsor), Strand Associates, Inc. (Hole Sponsor), and Wight & Co. (Hole Sponsor).

For more information about ACEC/PAC and sponsorship opportunities, contact Greg Knopp, gknopp@acec.org or Elizabeth Coit, ecoit@acec.org.

For more information about the Fall Conference, contact Krysta Perrault of ACEC's Meetings Department, at kperrault@acec.org or 202-682-4353.
