$1 Million-Plus Record-Breaking ACEC/PAC Election Cycle; 34 States Make Goal

Former ACEC Chairman Dan DeYoung (right) and PAC Champion of Virginia Sam Kirby (left) motored out of their "Batcave" to get Virginia over its ACEC/PAC goal line.

Propelled by a strong year-end finish, a record 34 states made their 2008 ACEC/PAC goals, generating a new annual fundraising record of $600,000 and putting ACEC into the top 4 percent of PAC's nationwide with a $1.2 million PAC election cycle (2 years).

"Thanks to the hard work of all ACEC/PAC supporters, we are in a strong position to make a difference in the stimulus package and other challenges over the next several months," said ACEC President Dave Raymond.

Pete Mesha (left) and Don Rutledge, Illinois ACEC/PAC Champions
Thirteen states made their goals in the last two weeks of the year: ACEC/Arkansas, ACEC/Idaho, ACEC/Illinois, ACEC/Michigan, ACEC/Mississippi, ACEC/Nebraska, ACEC/Nevada, ACEC/North Dakota, ACEC/Pennsylvania, ACEC/Virginia, ACEC/Washington, ACEC/West Virginia and ACEC/Wyoming.

Wayne Horlacher, Nevada ACEC/PAC Champion

States that made their PAC goals early in 2008 have already been featured in Last Word.

Illinois PAC Champions Pete Mesha of Wight and Company and Don Rutledge of the Farnsworth Group, both emphasized that "doing nothing was not an option." Said Mesha: "I explained that we're not giving to charity here, we're looking to invest in our industry and our own success."

Dayton Carpenter, West Virginia ACEC/PAC Champion
When the fundraising going got tough in Virginia, former ACEC Chairman Dan DeYoung of DJG and PAC Champion Sam Kirby of Froehling & Robertson joined forces to propel the Old Dominion state to the finish line. "Making goal was important to us because our leadership takes the PAC very seriously—it's the best thing we can do each year to promote a better business environment for our members," Kirby said.

Michigan PAC Champion Dan Fredendall, with Orchard Hiltz & McCliment, was acutely aware of the challenges of raising PAC funds in a down market, but he and State Executive Ron Brenke persevered. Said Fredendall, “our message was, you can invest in your business

now with a modest PAC contribution, or pay a lot more later in the form of less business and more government regulations. It’s your choice.”

"ACEC/PAC is the best tool we have as engineers to influence the composition of Congress and the direction of national policies impacting our industry," said Nevada PAC Champion Wayne Horlacher of PBS&J.

Dick Jacobson, Idaho ACEC/PAC Champion

Travis Conklin, Wyoming ACEC/PAC Champion
Dayton Carpenter, president of ACEC/West Virginia who also serves as the state’s PAC Champion from Carpenter Treatment Solutions, PLLC, said members in his state are realizing the connection between a strong political program and better representation on Capitol Hill. “The question shouldn’t be whether or not to give; it should be, how much. Look what’s at stake; can you afford NOT to give?”

New ACEC Online Seminar To Explore Carbon Footprinting Opportunities

With an increasing number of permitting authorities requiring data on a proposed project's impact on climate change as part of their approvals process, carbon footprinting is seen as an opportunity by many engineering firms.

ACEC will host a new online seminar Calculating Carbon Footprints—Potential Business for Engineering Companies on January 28, 2009, to give participants a firm foundation in the fundamentals of carbon footprinting.

"Municipalities now want to know what the footprint of a proposed project will be," said Mark van Soestbergen, founder of the International Carbon Bank & Exchange in Gainesville, Fla. "Engineers need to be able to respond to these new requirements."

In the seminar, van Soestbergen will provide the primary resources for carbon footprinting and offer insights into the numerous carbon trading systems used in states around the country. Seminar participants will also have the opportunity to do some actual carbon footprinting.
