ACEC-Backed FHWA Nominee Outlines Transportation Priorities, Challenges

FHWA nominee Victor Mendez has pledged to develop solutions to finance needed infrastructure improvements.
ACEC has voiced its support for President Obama's nomination of Victor Mendez, a civil engineer and former director of the Arizona Department of Transportation, to lead the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

At his confirmation hearing this week, Mendez outlined many challenges facing FHWA, including an impending cash shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund. Mendez told the Senate panel that he will "develop a robust transportation reauthorization solution in partnership with Congress, the Administration, Secretary LaHood, and the various transportation stakeholders."

In a letter of support for the appointment, ACEC President Dave Raymond noted Mendez's successful track record of industry collaboration in expanding Arizona's transportation system. "We believe that Mr. Mendez's instincts for gaining broad advice and applying critical thinking and management skills will serve the American public well," Raymond said. Mendez is expected to be confirmed by the Senate in the near future.

Help ACEC Tort Reform Efforts—Complete ACEC's Professional Liability Survey Today

The 2009 ACEC Professional Liability Insurance Survey of Member Firms for Fiscal Year 2008 will conclude at COB Friday, June 5.

This annual survey collects information on Member Firms' professional liability insurance, their claims experience, and the impact of the threat of litigation. The survey results can help Member Firms make important decisions regarding their professional liability insurance coverage and carrier.

"This information is crucial to determining the professional liability insurance landscape which our members must work with. It also provides important data for our tort reform efforts in Congress," said Charlie Geer, senior vice president of Kimley-Horn and Associates and chairman of the ACEC Risk Management Committee. "I strongly encourage each Member Firm's headquarters office to participate in this survey."

An email with a link to the survey has been sent to the key contacts of the Member Firms. If your firm has not yet received this link, click here to access the survey.

Member Firms that respond to the survey will receive a free copy of the complete results upon request. The survey results will also be available for sale through the ACEC Bookstore.

A summary of the survey results will be published in the July/August 2009 issue of Engineering Inc.
