Put Employees First to Make Customers Happy

Employees First, Customers Second
Turning Conventional Management Upside Down

Vineet Nayar

In this candid and personal account, Vineet Nayar — HCLT’s celebrated CEO — recounts how he defied the conventional wisdom that companies must put customers first, then turned the hierarchical pyramid upside down by making management accountable to the employees, and not the other way around. By doing so, Nayar fired the imagination of both employees and customers and set HCLT on a journey of transformation that has made it one of the fastest-growing and profitable global IT services companies and, according to BusinessWeek, one of the 20 most influential companies in the world.

Proposed Tax Agreement Benefits ACEC Member Firms

Congress and President Obama are negotiating an agreement to extend current individual income tax, dividends and capital gains rates for two years.

In addition, the proposal would extend the estate tax for two years with an exemption of $5 million and a top rate of 35 percent, give businesses 100 percent expensing of equipment purchases in 2011, and extend the R&D tax credit.

“This is good news for engineering firms and others struggling through the down economy,” said ACEC President Dave Raymond.

ACEC Leaders Named to State Transportation Transition Teams

Pennoni Associates President/CEO Anthony Bartolomeo

ACEC/New York President
Jay Simson
Pennsylvania Governor-Elect Tom Corbett has named Anthony Bartolomeo, president and CEO of Pennoni Associates in Philadelphia, to his transition team’s Transportation/Infrastructure Committee.

“Given the critical condition of both the Commonwealth’s infrastructure and its economy, it is imperative that alternative financing strategies be developed to repair, maintain, and upgrade our infrastructure systems,” said Bartolomeo.

In New York, Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo named ACEC/New York President Jay Simson to his Transition Team for Transportation and Infrastructure.

The team will identify, review and make recommendations to fill key positions at the transportation-related agencies and authorities in New York.

Connecticut, Tennessee Join Growing List of States Reaching ACEC/PAC Goal

ACEC/Connecticut PAC Champion Jerry Gerletz

ACEC/Tennessee PAC
Champion Steve Lane
ACEC/Connecticut and ACEC/Tennessee are the 15th and 16th states to meet their 2010 ACEC/PAC fundraising objectives.

Personal follow-up helped Connecticut meet its PAC goal for the fifth straight year. “It takes involvement by the state leadership and education of the membership on what ACEC does for us on Capitol Hill,” said PAC Champion Jerry Gerletz of STV in Stratford. “Once you explain what this program means to our legislative efforts in Congress, it’s an easy sale.”

For the seventh consecutive year, ACEC/Tennessee made its PAC goal. “Persistence was the key for us,” said ACEC/PAC Champion Steve Lane of Smith Seckman. “It paid off for us, just as our members’ investment in ACEC/PAC will pay off for their business.”
