A/E Employment Grows Steadily, Hits Post-Recession High in May

Despite the sluggish economy, architectural and engineering employment has increased for seven consecutive months. In May, total A/E employment topped 1.299 million, up from the recessionary low of 1.273 million in October, 2010.
Each month, ACEC will track A/E employment (see A/E Employment chart in left column) as an indicator of the overall healh of the design industry.
The May A/E employment total is the highest since September, 2009, but still substantially trails the pre-recession high of 1.453 million in February, 2008.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, a leading conservative voice, will kick off the ACEC 2011 Fall Conference at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, October 19-22.
Other speakers at the Conference include Jacobs CEO Craig Martin, former Shell Oil President John Hofmeister, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, CDM CEO Richard Fox, Sargent & Lundy CEO Alan “Bud” Wendorf and AMEC President Hisham Mahmoud.

ACEC Calls for Agencies to Follow Due Process in Issuing Regulations

In a recent letter to the White House, ACEC and other key industry groups called for federal agencies to stop skirting the required notice and comment process when issuing new regulations.
Increasingly, agencies have been issuing “interim rules” that allow them to implement new regulations immediately.
ACEC stated that the notice and comment process is critical to federal rulemaking, giving private industry the opportunity to amend and improve regulations prior to their application.

Deadline for Compensation Survey for State DOTs Extended to July 8

State DOTs and A/E firms are relying heavily on nationwide salary surveys to benchmark executive compensation in the wake of the revised AASHTO Audit Guide.
ACEC asks all Member Firms to participate in the Analytical/FMI 2011 A/E Executive Compensation Survey. Your firm’s participation will improve industry compensation data, provide State DOTs with accurate information, and give you the tools to benchmark executive compensation and be FAR compliant.

ACEC and NSPE are seeking nominations for the 2011 national QBS Awards Program, which recognizes public and private entities that use the QBS selection process at the state and local levels.
ACEC and NSPE will announce up to two QBS Award winners, one in the Non-Governmental Sector and one in the Governmental Sector, who will be honored during the ACEC Fall Conference in Las Vegas in October. There will also be up to four Merit Award winners, each of which will be recognized in a state event.
