Illinois $50K Surpasses ACEC/PAC Goal, Sets New National Milestone

Phil Houser

Darcie Gabrisko
ACEC/Illinois beat its ACEC/PAC fundraising goal this week, becoming the first state to raise more than $50,000 in a calendar year.

ACEC/IL President Phil Houser and President-elect Darcie Gabrisko, serving as ACEC/PAC Champions, mobilized their Board and membership to reach their fundraising target for the seventh consecutive year.

"We lead by example," said Houser. "We set the tone with our state Board, every one of whom is a Millennium Club member."

"We've created a culture of ACEC/PAC giving," said Gabrisko. "Our volunteer leadership recognizes the direct link between PAC fundraising and legislative achievement, and steps up to the plate each year."

Nevada Reaches PAC Goal as "Best Way to Improve Business Climate"

Sam Palmer
Exceeding its 2011 ACEC/PAC fundraising goal, Nevada joins the growing list of states in the winner's circle.

Even though the state is still trying to recover from tough economic times, ACEC/PAC Champion Sam Palmer of Terracon in Las Vegas said: "We decided the best way to improve our business climate was to improve the political climate for engineering firms throughout the nation."

House Passes ACEC-Backed Keystone Pipeline, Expensing Benefit

The House cleared tax legislation this week that extended a number of existing tax benefits and would also accelerate a decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline project.

In addition to extending a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, the Middle Class Tax Relief & Job Creation Act extends for an additional year a benefit allowing businesses of all sizes to expense 100 percent of the cost of new equipment purchases.

The bill would require the Administration to grant a permit for the Keystone pipeline within 60 days unless the President determines the project is not in the country’s best interests. ACEC has urged the Administration to move the project forward. Click here to view the Council's letter to the State Department.

The White House has threatened to veto the legislation because of the pipeline provision. Negotiations with the Administration and the Senate are expected to continue into the weekend.
