SUMMARY:The 60-Minute MBA for Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 12\, 2023\, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM (Eastern) \n\nBeing a brilliant engineer rarely translates into having a successful business. With all the years of education and training to make us experts in our profession\, the skills needed to have a successful business were conveniently overlooked. This webinar will fill the void and provide you with the business management highlights that every firm needs to apply to achieve their full potential. \nIn this session\, we will learn the fundamentals of all successful AE firms and provide the basis for making well-grounded business decisions. We will learn how firms can transition from being professionals providing services\, to highly tuned businesses that can identify the needs of the marketplace and create services and products that are appropriately priced and yield consistent and greater profits. \nRather than seeking out new projects that merely build upon your current skills\, you will start from a business-thinking mindset\, where processes that are critical to building a thriving firm are examined and constituted in your firm. We will explore the importance of data within an engineering firm and demonstrate how careful collection and interpretation can lead your firm into more exciting and profitable territory. \nJoin us for an engaging\, live webinar presented by Steven Burns\, FAIA\, Founder of The Well-Designed Firm as he shares lessons learned over 35 years working with over 1\,300 engineering firms. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn how to: \n\nIdentify why a “business-thinking” mindset is of utmost importance for service professionals\nExplain best practices for implementing a metrics-oriented leadership system\nSummarize how data-based performance management drives smarter business decisions\nAnalyze how profitability drives growth rather than being merely a result\nReframe your firm as a platform that enables you to achieve your business and personal goals\n\n*The recording will be added to the class materials the following day. \nPresenter: Steve Burns\, FAIA\, Founder\, The Well-Designed Firm \nAbout BQE: BQE CORE is the award-winning firm management software\, created by engineers for engineers\, that project-based firms trust to run their operations for better project outcomes\, and more profitable futures. SUMMARY:Coaching and Mentoring Leaders: Lessons from Executive Coaching to Help Leaders Better Develop Leadership Talent
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 16\, 2023\, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live class? Pre-order the on-demand recording! \n\nMany organizations go through exercises like succession planning to identify and develop key executives who will be the future leaders of the company. Leaders often struggle to provide sufficient coaching and support to the candidates identified. They also many times are not effective in coaching\, having difficult discussions or providing feedback to their peers at the senior leadership levels. The webinar will focus on helping leaders develop and apply skills utilized by external executive coaches to help them coach and mentor not only high potential executives but also apply those skills in coaching/providing feedback to peers at an executive level. This includes recognizing how to create awareness of the need for change\, giving feedback in a positive manner\, using questions effectively\, process challenges in coaching\, success criteria\, types of issues that are usually addressed and skills required to be an effective coach/mentor. The session will be interactive and will provide opportunities to discuss specific challenges/situations. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIncrease the ability of leaders to build off the strengths of their managers to address talent development challenges\nDevelop coaching skills for leaders\nIncrease the ability of leaders to improve their coaching dialogue\nRecognize the best way to balance the use of questions vs. giving suggestions in coaching/mentoring discussions with staff\n\nPresenter: Ted Gerber\, President\, Addison Resources Group LLC

SUMMARY:Delegated Design: Managing Risk and Fulfilling Contractual Obligations
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 25\, 2023\, 1:30 – 3:00 PM (Eastern)\n \nNot available for the live online class? Click here to pre-order the on-demand recording!  \n\nDelegated design is common in modern capital projects but is frequently misunderstood and can be improperly implemented. Delegated design is when the construction contract requires the contractor\, subcontractor\, or supplier to engage the services of a licensed\, registered design professional to prepare the final design of a specific element of the completed project\, based on performance and design criteria in the construction contract. This is\, in effect\, a “mini design-build project within a project”. Because two different design professionals have their fingers in a delegated design\, many myths and misconceptions exist concerning delegated design and its attendant liability. This presentation will address appropriate means of managing the architect’s or engineer’s risk while fulfilling its contractual obligations. \nThis presentation will discuss what is and is not delegated design; types of work that are commonly delegated design \,and why; making the project owner aware of the need for delegated design\, and associated scheduling and budgeting; locations within the construction documents where delegated design requirements are indicated; how to properly require a delegated design; and how to properly review and process delegated design shop drawings and other\, related submittals. \nAfter attending this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nExplain delegated design’s uses\nDiscuss the architect’s or engineer’s responsibilities in delegated design\nIndicate available resources\nExplain how to properly delegate design responsibility\nDiscuss proper processing of delegated design submittals during construction\n\nSpeaker: Kevin O’Beirne\, PE\, FCSI\, CCS\, CCCA\, National Manager of Engineering Specifications\, HDR

SUMMARY:The 50-Year Old NEPA Gets a Facelift: How Different Does It Look?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 19\, 2023\, 1:30 – 3:00 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live online class? Click here to pre-order the on-demand recording! \n\nThe Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 (FRA) enacted the first legislative amendments directly to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) statute in approximately 50 years. These new provisions have been both touted as meaningful permitting reforms and downplayed as generally codifying existing best practices. The FRA also has implications for the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) pending plans to revise its federal government-wide regulations implementing NEPA\, including expected walk-backs of revisions to those regulations enacted in 2020. In this session we will distill what has changed under NEPA and identify opportunities and challenges that engineering and legal practitioners can realistically expect in implementing NEPA’s new provisions going forward. \nAmong Questions to be Discussed: \n\nHow does the FRA aim to accelerate NEPA reviews\, and how effective will it be?\nWhat types of federal agency actions now trigger NEPA?\nHow will the FRA “reasonably foreseeable” standard affect the scope of NEPA reviews?\nWhat is the role of project proponents and contractors in preparing NEPA documents?\nWhat constraints or flexibility does the FRA create for CEQ and agency regulations and initiatives\, including around environmental justice and climate change efforts?\nDoes the FRA alter legal risks for projects challenged in courts?\n\nPresenter: Jamie Auslander and Eric Christensen\, Beveridge & Diamond
