SUMMARY:New Datums – New Coordinates – New Heights
DESCRIPTION:Event Details: \nDate: September 10\, 2025\nTime: 1:30–2:30 PM ET\nOnline Presentation \nEarn 1 PDH \nFREE For All COPS Members  \nAre You Ready for 2025? \nIn 2025\, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and CO-OPS will release new\, improved horizontal and vertical datums—the most significant update in decades to the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). \nThese changes will fundamentally redefine positional and elevation data across the United States. \nWhy This Matters \nThe adoption of these new datums will impact nearly every engineering discipline: \n\nCivil Engineering:\nDesign elevations\, drainage plans\, and infrastructure modeling will need to be updated to reflect new reference surfaces. Incorrect transformations could result in costly rework or regulatory noncompliance.\nTransportation Engineering:\nRoadway alignments\, bridge clearances\, and right-of-way boundaries will be affected by shifts in horizontal and vertical coordinates.\nStructural Engineering:\nSite plans and foundation elevations will require precise adjustment to match updated datums\, especially in coastal or subsiding regions.\nSurveying and Mapping:\nAll legacy data tied to NAD83 and NAVD88 will need careful conversion to maintain continuity with the new standards.\nUtilities and GIS Professionals:\nAsset locations\, service corridors\, and GIS datasets must be reconciled to avoid misalignment across systems.\n\nWhat You’ll Learn in This Session \n\nThe rationale and technical background behind the 2025 datum updates.\nExpected impacts to coordinate and elevation data across the country.\nDemonstrations of transformation and conversion tools.\nPractical guidance on transitioning your workflows and communicating changes to stakeholders.\n\nFeatured Speaker \nDavid Doyle\nFormer Chief Geodetic Surveyor\, National Geodetic Survey (NGS) \nDavid Doyle has over 40 years of experience in geodesy\, coordinate systems\, and datum modernization. He has played a leadership role in shaping national policies and educating professionals on geodetic standards. \nHis expertise will guide you through the technical\, regulatory\, and practical impacts of the 2025 datums—so you can prepare confidently. \nRecent Updates on the 2025 Datum Transition  \nThe National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) have shared new milestones in the modernization of the National Spatial Reference System: \n\nConfirmed 2025 Launch: The release remains on schedule for 2025\, with no further delays announced.\nNew Reference Frames: Four new terrestrial reference frames (including NATRF2022) and a new geopotential datum (NAPGD2022) will replace NAD83 and NAVD88.\nBeta Transformation Tools Available: Updated versions of tools like VERTCON3 and the NOAA Coordinate Conversion and Transformation Tool (NCAT) are available in beta for testing estimated coordinate and elevation shifts.\nFinal State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS2022) Zones: Most states now have finalized definitions for SPCS2022 zones. Many zones have been redefined\, which could create noticeable changes for engineering projects.\nRecommended Early Adoption: NGS encourages agencies\, surveyors\, and engineering firms to start evaluating and planning for data integration\, software updates\, and workflow changes.\n\nThese changes represent the most significant updates to national coordinate systems in over 30 years—and they will impact nearly every discipline that relies on geospatial data.

SUMMARY:EEA Awards ACEC of Maine
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) sponsors a national Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) program to recognize engineering projects which epitomize quality\, innovation\, value\, and client satisfaction. A requirement for entry into ACEC’s national competition is participation in a Member Organization’s engineering excellence program. Since 1988\, ACEC of Maine has sponsored such a program. The annual ACEC of Maine Engineering Excellence Awards program precedes the national program by several months to afford award winners ample time to prepare their submittals to the ACEC national program. The 2026 ACEC of Maine Engineering Excellence Awards entry requirements have been simplified and are slightly different than the ACEC’s national competition requirements. This simplification is intended to encourage member firms to submit to ACEC of Maine’s competition. Firms wishing to submit to ACEC’s national competition will need to complete some additional requirements and comply with those guidelines that are available online. It is anticipated that most of the effort to enter the Maine competition is transferrable to the national competition. \nThe ACEC of Maine Awards Committee has made every effort to make the competition fair to all firms\, regardless of size or discipline. All firms are urged to submit an entry to showcase a project that they have recently completed. Participation in the program boosts staff morale\, improves client relations\, and assures state-wide publicity. All entries will be posted on ACEC of Maine’s web site (https://eea.acec.org/maine) upon completion of the competition. All participants in the competition will be recognized at ACEC of Maine’s 2025 Fall Forum and Engineering Excellence Awards event on November 13\, 2025. All entrants will make a brief presentation on their EEA submittals at that time. Representatives for all projects should be present and available to accept awards. \nAll applications will be submitted electronically\, via the ACEC of Maine EEA portal. Instructions for submittal are below. Please contact ACEC of Maine Executive Director\, Tanya Griffeth\, at info@acecmaine.com or (207) 557-0939 or Kevin Cooley\, P.E. at Kleinschmidt Associates (207-416-1272) with questions. \nThe deadline for submitting ACEC of Maine entries is Friday\, October 10\, 2025. Judging will take place the week of October 13\, 2025. Awards will be presented at ACEC of Maine’s Fall Forum and Engineering Excellence Awards event on November 13\, 2025.

SUMMARY:What Young Engineering Professionals Want! A Spotlight on the Firm of the Future Study on Workforce
DESCRIPTION:What do young engineering professionals really want from their consulting careers—and what will make them stay with your firm? \nThis session combines rich demographic data on the industry’s workforce with new insights from the new Firm of the Future study on workforce. The research examines how many engineers are graduating\, how many are retiring\, and how many are leaving the U.S. due to immigration challenges. It also draws on a national survey of nearly 2\,000 individuals—including engineers\, engineering students\, and non-engineers of all ages across the industry—alongside in-depth interviews with early career and senior professionals. \nWe’ll explore how younger engineers view career growth\, purpose\, values\, mentorship\, leadership\, and firm culture—and how those expectations are evolving compared to their senior peers. Attendees will come away with actionable strategies to help firms of all sizes attract\, engage\, and retain the workforce of the future. \nPanelists:\nJoseph Bates\, Senior Research Consultant\, ACEC Research Institute\nCourtney Hance\, MI‑4 Senior Program Director\, RS&H\nKeri Kocur\, Chief People Officer\, VHB\nCeleste Shinn\, Project Manager\, Stolfus & Associates\nDylan Seesman\, Principal\, Director of Operations\, JQOL
