SUMMARY:Capitalization Basics for Privately Held AEC Firms
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 2\, 2023\, 1:30 – 3:00 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live online class? Pre-order the On-demand Recording! \n\nThe principal cause of AEC firm failure is often said to be under capitalization. Your firm can be highly successful and profitable\, but still run out of financial capital. Architects\, engineers\, and contractors are trained to build buildings and solve technical problems\, not how to finance a business. Often their accountants can’t tell them how much capital they need. There is even confusion about what financial capital is. \nAs a firm leader\, you are responsible for the success of the firm. The livelihood of your staff depend on your ability to manage the firm. You need a solid understanding of the financial foundation of the firm\, its capital. \nIn this presentation we discuss the basics of financial capital for privately held AEC firms\, including: \n\nDefine capital and capitalization.\nExplain why capital is necessary for AEC firms.\nDiscuss what drives how much capital an AEC firm needs.\nExplain the different types of capital for privately held firms.\nExplain how capital affects the risk profile of your entire firm.\n\nPresenter: Robert Gabel\, independent consultant and serving on the Board of Directors for Shepley Bulfinch

SUMMARY:Delivering on the Promise of Smarter Buildings While Spending Less
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 3\, 2023\, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live online class? Pre-order the on-demand recording! \n\nYou can design\, build\, and operate smarter facilities without spending more money. In fact\, you’ll likely end up spending less. \nSmart building solutions offer owners a tremendous amount of possibility–the use of fewer building materials\, better performance and functionality\, lower cost to operate and maintain\, better security\, more and better amenities\, greater occupant comfort\, and\, for workplaces\, a boost in team productivity. \nBut few owners are aware of all this potential. As a result\, even fewer are able to capitalize on the full intelligence afforded by “smarter” buildings. The root of the problem is often too much focus on the technology–not enough on the goals behind its use. The results? Owners and facility executives install technology solutions with little thought to integration and interoperability–factors that determine just how smart building technology can be. \nThe Telecommunications Industry Association director\, smart buildings program\, Marta Soncondi and Drew Deatherage\, a smart buildings expert and security and telecommunications industry veteran\, will walk participants through a framework that will help them understand and make informed decisions about smart technology solutions for reaching their goals–be they about lowering the costs of building and operating schools\, improving student outcomes\, bolstering security\, and\, in so doing\, raising student and staff well-being. Participants will also learn an integrated approach\, one that involves getting stakeholders involved early on\, that helps ensure goals are met and the right experience is created even with tight budgets. \nTakeaways: \n\nA framework and process participants can use to define\, discover\, and deliver\nHow smarter buildings deliver more value to owners\, design teams\, and tenants–at a lower cost\nThe most common obstacles to smart buildings–and how to overcome them\nWhere to start and how\n\nPresenters: Drew Deatherage\, Vice President of Sales and Marketing\, CRUX and Marta Soncodi\, Director of the Smart Buildings Program\, The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA)
