SUMMARY:Engineering and Public Works Roadshow - Phoenix\, AZ
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, February 22nd\, the Engineering and Public Works Roadshow will stop in Phoenix\, AZ\, to spotlight the Northwest Valley Infrastructure project. \nThis important infrastructure project results from industry and state and federal government cooperation. The plant\, owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)\, decided to invest in Phoenix after Congress passed the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors and Science (CHIPS) Act of 2022. \nThe $125 million construction project required installing the water and wastewater infrastructure within an exceedingly accelerated schedule that allowed less than six months for pre-construction and procurement and only a nine-month window. \nJoin us to celebrate this example of engineering and public works excellence by watching the live stream of the Roadshow stop. \n\n\nTune to www.acec.org or www.infrastructureroadshow.org at 11:30 AM MST on February 22nd to watch the event. \n\n\nThe Engineering and Public Works Roadshow is a joint project of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC)\, the American Public Works Association (APWA)\, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). \nThe Roadshow marks the first time the leading organizations representing the designers and public operators of America’s infrastructure have joined together to shine a spotlight on what successful infrastructure investment means for the nation’s economy\, jobs\, the environment\, and our future.  \n

SUMMARY:Funding for Reduced-Carbon Concrete: Opportunities in Paving and Construction
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 31\, 2024\, 1:30 PM – 2:45 PM (Eastern) \nClients want America’s engineering industry to deliver projects that reduce their carbon footprint\, and reduced carbon concrete is part of the solution.  What’s more\, federal funding is available to drive the transition to low carbon materials forward.  ACEC is offering a special online class to enable members to learn more about the technology and the new funding available to put it to use\, both for transportation and vertical construction projects\, as well eligibility of other materials\, such as asphalt. \nConstruction project specifications are changing because of client requirements for low-carbon materials. This trend provides an opportunity for firms to provide expertise and consultation to achieve sustainable\, resilient\, and long-lasting results. \nThe Inflation Reduction Act provides over $5 billion in grant funding to be used for three new Federal Highway Administration programs\, including Low-Carbon Transportation Materials Grants. An anticipated $2 billion in funding is expected to be announced to support transportation programs. \nKey Takeaways: \n\n\n\nAnticipating changes to materials because of low-carbon requirements and initiatives\nSpecific implications and solutions\nResources to help meet low carbon objectives\n\n\n\nThis class will be recorded and the recording will be added to the class materials the following day. \nPresenters: Dr. Peter Taylor P.E. (IL)\, FACI\, Director\, National Concrete Pavement Technology Center; Thomas Van Dam\, Ph.D.\, P.E.\, FACI\, Principal\, Wiss\, Janney\, Elstner Associates\, Inc.; and Larry Sutter\, Principal\, Sutter Engineering LLC \nPreview this topic! SUMMARY:Federal Contractor Ban on TikTok – What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 17\, 2023\, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live class? Pre-order the on-demand recording! \nAre your employees still using TikTok? If you are a federal government contractor\, then a new ban on ByteDance technology impacts your firm. \nAs the result of a ban imposed by FAR 52.204-27\, an interim rule prohibiting ByteDance on any contracts whose performance may involve the use of IT by contractors has taken effect. The TikTok prohibition applies to the presence or use of any covered application on any information technology owned or managed by a contractor including equipment provided by the contractor’s employees unless an exception is granted in accordance with OMB Memorandum M–23–13. \nJeremy Burkart\, an experienced government contracts litigation attorney at Holland & Knight LLP\, will present on the legal implications for firms. Prior to joining the Holland & Knight\, he was an Army JAG Officer. \nBeijing-based company\, ByteDance\, owner of TikTok\, is subject to laws in China that make information from users accessible to the Chinese government. This has raised concerns that the Chinese government could spy on American users\, which is why Congress passed the “No TikTok on Government Devices Act” with wide\, bipartisan margins. TikTok is also being investigated by the FBI and the Department of Justice\, and ByteDance has confirmed that it has previously used TikTok to monitor the physical locations of American journalists. \nAfter attending this session participants will: \n\nUnderstand the role and tools IT departments have to enforce these measures by remotely removing the TikTok application across selected devices.\nThe legality of enforcing a ban on personal devices.\nThe impacts on federal contracting if your employee’s devices are using this technology and the exceptions allowable under the FAR.\n\nPresenter: Jeremy Burkart\, Associate\, Holland & Knight LLP

SUMMARY:What's the Right Value for Your Firm?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 16\, 2023\, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM (Eastern) \nNot available for the live class? Pre-order the on-demand recording! \nMany engineering firm owners want to remain employee-owned but encounter valuation-related issues that potentially jeopardize this goal. On the one hand\, the gap between discounted internal value and external offers may pressure owners to sell. On the other\, unreasonably high valuations may not be sustainable—forcing a sale. Matt Fultz and Ryan Beach have performed hundreds of engineering firm valuations and look forward to sharing their experiences to help inform current and prospective business owners of the pros/cons of valuation formulas\, the difference between book value and enterprise value\, and the methods used by valuation professionals\, to shed light on what it takes to design a durable ownership program that promotes fairness for buyers and sellers. \nLearning objectives: \n\nReview commonly used methods for valuing a business\, including the asset\, market\, and income approaches and how they differ from formula-based approaches.\nGain a better understanding of the underlying financial factors that impact firm value.\nExplore the link between firm financial performance and building shareholder value.\n\nPresenter: Matthew K. Fultz\, ASA and Ryan Beach\, Matheson Financial Advisors
