ACEC Forms Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee; Join Today

To the ACEC Community,

Building a more diverse and inclusive engineering industry isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. The business case for diversity has been well established. Diverse firms are twice as likely to hit their financial targets. And our clients are increasingly choosing diverse and inclusive teams to design their infrastructure projects.

The future of the engineering industry also depends on recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce.  According to the National Science Foundation, more than 30 percent of the engineering workforce is over the age of 50 and expected to retire in the next 15 years.  A diverse talent pipeline will help our firms to remain competitive.

Recognizing this priority, ACEC has created the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee, and we invite all interested ACEC members to join. You may email Jacklin Siganda, ACEC Coordinator of Member Services, at jsiganda@acec.org to be added to the Committee.

The Committee will work collaboratively within ACEC and with ACEC Member Organizations to advance advocacy priorities, create resources for member firms, develop partnerships with engineering societies that represent diverse communities, ensure that paths to leadership are open to all interested members, and provide opportunities for diverse ACEC members to connect with the Council and one another.

Lisa Brothers, CEO of Nitsch Engineering, will chair the committee, with Andy Platz, CEO of Mead & Hunt, and Sean McCone, Executive Vice President of Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, serving as vice-chairs.  Michael Cooper, President of HED, will serve as the Executive Committee liaison and Jonathan Curry, Executive Director of ACEC-MN, will be the NAECE representative to the Committee.

Embodying diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging is an integral piece of the ACEC Strategic Plan, envisioning a Council with diverse leadership and membership that is part of a vibrant profession.

We hope you will join ACEC in this important work.
