Construction Spending Flat in April; Public Spending Up

U.S. Construction speing in April, 2019 was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,298 billion, down slightly from the March rate of $1,299 billion. For the first four months of the year, construction spending totaled $386.1 billion, 0.2 percent above the $385.5 billion total for the same period in 2018.

Spending on private construction in April was estimated at a seasonally adjusted rate of $954 billion, down 1.7 percent from the March total of $970.4 billion. Residential construction fell 0.6 percent to $499.3 billion and non-residential construction slipped 2.9 percent to $454.7 billion. Manufacturing construction led the decline, dropping 7.2 percent, followed by commercial (-4.5 percent) and health care (-3.9 percent) construction.

In the public sector, construction spending rose 4.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted rate of $344.6 billion. Highway and street construction spending climbed 6.8 percent in April, educational construction was up 2.1 percent, and sewage and waste disposal construction rose 2.2 percent.
