Letter from ACEC CEO Linda Bauer Darr: Turning the Corner Towards Recovery

To the ACEC Community:

We’ve reached the middle of April and it appears that we have turned a corner on our ongoing health crisis. Our leaders have begun to talk about when and how the American economy will re-open and what that means for business owners and the people they employ.  While there are still more questions than answers on this point, moving the conversation to re-opening has created a sense of optimism that is very welcome given the weeks of uncertainty we have all just experienced.

I am pleased to be able to tell you that the engineering industry will be part of that conversation.  Earlier today, I was appointed to the President’s Great American Economic Revival Industry Group for construction, labor and the workforce.  This means our industry will have a voice at the table as the Administration begins to chart a course out of the pandemic and into recovery.

At ACEC National, we remain committed to the health and safety of our staff, our members and the industry as a whole.  We are committed to being your trusted advisor through this pandemic, offering access to expert advice, relevant guidance and a platform to share your experiences. Make sure to check our Coronavirus Resource Center for up-to-the-minute information.

As many of you know, we are in the process of rescheduling the Engineering Excellence Awards for later in the year. We hope to have a physical celebration of engineering excellence in November or December which we hope to be a chance for us to reconnect in person.

The cancellation of our Annual Convention and Legislative Summit required us to move our advocacy program to a virtual event.  In the coming days, we will launch a grassroots lobbying effort to promote a recovery agenda built around a robust and long-term infrastructure program and work with our state organizations to organize virtual meetings with key lawmakers.  Our social media and other communications tools will be fully utilized in this effort, and we will coordinate with other engineering and infrastructure-related organizations to push as much as possible a common message to lawmakers.  Stay tuned for more.

Finally, we want to make sure you save the date for next Saturday, April 25th when ACEC will hold its first-ever Board of Directors meeting as a virtual event. In another first, we are inviting all ACEC members to participate in the meeting where we will welcome our new Chair and ExCom members.  The virtual meeting will take place between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM Eastern on the 25th.  Click here and bookmark this link to join the meeting.

As always, stay safe and keep up your essential work for the nation.

Linda Bauer Darr
