Net Zero Buildings Week Celebrates Clean Energy Future

During Net Zero Buildings Week (March 29-April 2), building industry organizations are showcasing and promoting the benefits of net zero buildings for a clean energy future.

The campaign aims to raise awareness for net zero building performance by reaching 100,000 building owners, operators, engineers, architects, construction firms, consultants, and others designing, building, owning and operating new construction and renovation projects.

Engineering firms have been pursuing net zero, with several commiting to achieving net-zero status in their operations. Jacobs announced earlier this year that it  reached net zero carbon for its operations and business travel in 2020, both by reducing its carbon consumption and neutralizing remaining carbon impact by purchasing renewable energy and carbon offsets. The firm plans to be carbon negative by 2030. Other firms, such as Stantec and Arup, have committed to reaching net zero in their operations by 2030.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed LEED Zero to verify achieving net zero goals in existing buildings, with certification awarded in four categories: carbon, energy, water, and waste. The USGBC reports that there are 19 LEED Zero projects with a 28 certifications across the four categories.
