Senators Introduce Bill to Set Timeline for EPA on PFAS

Senators Tom Carper (D-DE) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) have introduced a bill to require the Environmental Protection Agency to designate per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water as hazardous substances under the Superfund law. “Designating these chemicals as hazardous substances will, at a minimum, start the process to ensuring contaminated sites across the country are cleaned up, and Americans are safer from the threat posed by these emerging contaminants,” said Carper. The EPA announced earlier this year that it would be the process to classify two types of PFAS under the Superfund law. The proposed bill would mandate that the process be completed within one year of passage. Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) has put forward a companion bill in the House. In addition to Carper and Murkowski, 18 Senators have signed on to the bill.
