Three Members Receive 2020 ACEC Community Service Awards

Each year, ACEC recognizes principals or managers of ACEC Member Firm who have made outstanding contributions to the quality of life in their community. In 2020, ACEC Community Service Awards go to three exceptional members: Janice Gary, vice president of A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. in Rockville, Md.; Karen Kahl, Director, Transportation of RK&K in Baltimore, Md.; James Kleingers, President/CEO of The Kleingers Group in West Chester, Ohio.

Gary contributes her time and energy to groups including educators, A/E/C organizations, religious congregations, college students, underprivileged families, and many more. Through her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she has led numerous efforts to drive voter participation and she has represented her firm at meetings and conferences hosted by the Department of Civil Rights. She is the chair of the Inclusion and Diversity Committee within her firm, and annually she orchestrates group participation in fundraising events including the Walk for Life, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the March of Dimes, and the Pink Goes Red event to raise awareness for heart health.

Kahl has supported more than 20 organizations with her volunteering, collections, or financial donations. Her longest involvement has been with the Tyanna Barre O’Brien Breast Cancer Foundation, which supports the development of better breast cancer detection methods. She has has been active in numerous other community efforts including participating in the AVON Breast Cancer three-day, 60-mile fundraiser walk; collecting and donating food to local food drives; collecting and onating winter clothes and household goods for the International Refugee Committee; collecting school supplies for homeless children; organizing an education fund for African children; and collecting clothing for a 60-person group of homeless women supported by the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore.

The list of organizations that Kleingers supports is impressive: Atrium Health System Board of Trustees, Boy Scouts of America, Abilities First Board of Trustees, Bishop Fenwick High School Development Commitee, Holy Family Parish Finance Committee, Middletown Moving Forward Board of Trustees, and the local Chamber of Commerce. For Kleingers, public leadership is not only about serving on high-level boards, but also about the one-on-one time spent making a difference in individuals’ lives. For many yeaers, he has worked closely with individual scouts to help them accomplish their goals.
