Urban Residential Water Rate Increases Continue Downward Trend

The average price of residential drinking water for a family of four using 50 gallons per person per day rose 3.6 percent last year, according to the latest annual survey of water prices in 30 major U.S. cities by Circle of Blue.

It is the smallest increase in the survey’s 10-year history and continues the gradual decleration of water rate increases in those cities. The average rate for a family of four using 100 gallons daily rose 3.2 percent

The biggest increases were in the Southwest, where cities have been struggling with drought, climate change, and other natural conditions.

Fresno topped the list with a 14.7 percent water rate increase, followed by Baltimore (9.7 percent) Chicago (9.6 percent), San Jose (8 percent), Tucson (7.9 percent), Phoenix (7.5 percent) and San Francisco (7.4 percent)
