Water, Energy & Environment Committee Meeting Addresses Resilience

Resilience issues were top of mind at ACEC’s Water, Energy and Environment Committee’s winter meeting this week in Washington, D.C.

Jeffrey Arnold, senior climate scientist at the U.S Army Corps of Engineers and Craig Zamuda, senior policy advisor at the Department of Energy, discussed federal efforts to build resiliency into future infrastructure investments. As a first step, Zamuda said he is collecting local examples of resilience codes and standards from around the country. Any ACEC members who have resilience codes or standards in their markets are asked to forward them to ACEC Director of Water, Energy and Environment Programs Lynn Schloesser.

Other issues covered in the meeting included implementation of Integrated Planning to manage drinking, storm and waste water to meet environmental requirements; development of webinar series on cyber security for Member Firms; engagement with USACE on WIFIA financing development and contracting out; the unique role of the DOE Loan Program in technology commercialization; DOD efforts to meet the challenges of emerging contaminants in drinking water (PFAS); and how to respond to a recent U.S. Conference of Mayors procurement report on pipe materials.

Speakers at the meeting included: John Coho, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Maureen Sullivan, Department of Defense; Doug Schultz, Department of Energy; Tracey Monteith, Black & Veatch; James Spiers, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association; and Rich Anderson, U.S. Conference of Mayors.
