As climate impacts become more frequent and severe, the engineering profession is confronting heightened expectations and risk—with increased legal scrutiny—to accommodate reasonably foreseeable future and uncertain conditions into the design process for critical infrastructure. In response, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) has released new guidance outlining how to apply the Standard of Care to this new risk environment.
This session will provide a timely and practical overview of how climate change is reshaping professional responsibilities across disciplines. From design decisions to liability exposure, and from client expectations to insurance considerations, we’ll discuss how engineering leaders can navigate this transformation while maintaining a defensible and resilient practice.
Key Takeaways:
- Gain insight into climate trends and how they are driving shifts in project expectations and design standards
- Understand the implications of ACEC’s updated guidance on professional duty and legal exposure
- Explore how courts, insurers, and clients are responding to the risks of designing in a climate-impacted world
- Learn strategies for balancing resilience, code compliance, and contractual scope
- Discuss practical approaches to managing uncertainty, risk allocation, and cost in today’s volatile environment
