Alabama Passes Gas Tax Increase to Fund Infrastructure Investment

Alabama Passes Gas Tax Increase to Fund Infrastructure Investment

On Tuesday, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed a landmark transportation funding law, increasing the state gas tax by 10 cents per gallon over the next three years. All the proceeds will fund road and bridge construction.

The law includes an indexing mechanism tied to the National Highway Construction Index and will be adjusted every two years.

“The passage of this bill effort is a monumental victory for the State of Alabama”, says ACEC/Alabama Executive Director Renee Casillas. “ACEC Alabama has been at the forefront of this effort for the past eight years. Because of our membership support, we had this tremendous opportunity to participate in the legislative process.

ACEC/AL is a member of the Alliance for Alabama’s Infrastructure (AAI) which spearheaded the advocacy efforts in support of the legislation. ACEC/AL Transportation Committee Chairman Jerry McCarley of GARVER serves as a member of the AAI board of directors and Casillas served in an advisory role to AAI.

“Because of Governor Kay Ivey’s unwavering support, bill sponsors Rep. Bill Poole and Sen. Clyde Chambliss, and the bipartisan effort led by other leaders in the Alabama State Legislature, the Rebuild Alabama Plan is now law,” said Casillas. “With the Rebuild Alabama plan, we have made a sound investment in our state transportation infrastructure to move Alabama forward in public safety, economic development and prosperity for generations to come.”
