At ACEC’s Fall Conference in New Orleans, ACEC presented five engineers with the prestigious Young Professional of the Year Award. Of these five finalists, Tevis Holzer, a project manager with Banner Associates in Brookings, South Dakota, was named the 2024 ACEC Young Professional of the Year.

Employed by ACEC member firms, award recipients were selected by the ACEC College of Fellows for demonstrating outstanding contributions to the engineering profession despite being in the early stages of their careers. Nominations are made through ACEC’s 51 state Member Organizations. Here, we spotlight the 2024 Young Professionals of the Year.

Sarah Carroll is a project manager with Creighton Manning, a GAI Company, in Syracuse, New York. An accomplished transportation engineer, Sarah’s contributions to her firm, her community, and the industry can be seen throughout central and western New York. Those contributions led to Sarah being recognized as one of Central New York’s 40 under 40. Committed to incubating upcoming talent, she also serves as chair of the newly formed Upstate Emerging Leaders Committee.

Sarah’s (far left) tenth year as co-chair of the local non-profit organization Adapt CNY and her annual pop-up bike share and education events led to soliciting for a micro-mobility (bicycle and scooter share) company to come to the City of Syracuse. The bike share fleet now includes over 500 e-bikes and scooters, which provide inexpensive transportation for access to work, education, grocery stores, and other businesses.

Tevis Holzer is a project manager with Banner Associates in Brookings, South Dakota. Tevis recently served as the primary structural engineer on the expansion of a large-scale wastewater treatment facility. Formerly employed by a large international firm, Tevis has leveraged that experience to contribute significantly to a continuous improvement mindset within Banner.

Tevis conducts a routine inspection of a foundation system for a large generator fuel tank. As a structural engineer, Tevis spends a great deal of time on the design and construction of water and wastewater treatment plants. These large projects, which are a specialty for Banner Associates, include significant structures such as concrete tanks, foundations, and associated buildings.

Alison Love is a senior structural engineer with STV in Boston. Alison joined STV out of college in 2011 and has become an integral member of the Boston team. She successfully contributes to complex design projects like the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation. At the same time, Alison influences the kind of vibrant office culture that encourages collaboration and attracts the next generation of engineers.

Samantha Miller is a senior engineer with CHA Consulting Inc. out of Syracuse, New York. Samantha is recognized as one of the future leaders of her firm. She has contributed to dozens of environmental projects across New York and beyond. Samantha’s work is a boon not only to CHA, but also to her fellow citizens, as those projects have upgraded and cleaned toxic and hazardous sites across the state.

During a remediation project where Samantha provided environmental oversight, the team excavated historic artifacts from below the ground.

Melissa Pennington is a project manager with Halff in Tallahassee, Florida. Her work has played a crucial role in creating safe gathering spaces in traditionally underserved neighborhoods in Florida’s state capital. As an active volunteer in Boys Town North Florida, Melissa’s work supports at-risk youth and families through residential care and community outreach programs.

Through her volunteer efforts with Boys Town North Florida, Melissa recently led a cornhole tournament for the families, using boards she built with the children for the competition. Melissa enjoys participating in volunteer opportunities provided by Halff’s employee-led nonprofit, the Halff Community Initiative (HCI).
