The Architect/Engineer Professional Standard of Care

One of the most important aspects that designers must understand as they pursue their craft is the standard to which they will be determined to be negligent, or not negligent: the Professional Standard of Care.

In this session, Thomas Harkins of Willis A&E and Robert Stanton of Willis Towers Watson will dive deeply into the Architect/Engineer Professional Standard of Care, explaining the factors affecting the Standard of Care, and why it is not a one-size-fits-all definition; reviewing claims examples to illustrate points being made; discussing fiduciary vs. independent contractor status, and the concept of informed consent; discussing the definition and address the scope of Standard of Care, as well as the effect of evolving technological and project delivery systems, as well as innovation is having on the interpretation of Standard of Care; and analyzing Standard of Care in the context of life-safety code analysis and interpretation, ethical duties relative to public safety, and job site duties.
