As part of Engineers Week 2026, Max Williams, P.E., a coastal engineer at KS Associates, Inc., spoke to Elyria High School students on February 23, about the specialized field of coastal engineering.
Williams explained how coastal engineering differs from traditional engineering and shared real-world project examples. He also offered insights into his work and career path in hopes of inspiring students to pursue opportunities in engineering.
Many students were surprised to discover that coastal engineering is a distinct engineering discipline, and this was their first exposure to it as a potential career path. Williams highlighted the impact coastal engineers have on shorelines, waterfront access, environmental resilience, and community infrastructure. A fitting message during Engineers Week, which celebrates the many ways engineers innovate, protect communities, and solve challenges to shape a resilient future.
