Tomorrow at 2 PM, the Engineering and Public Works Roadshow will hold an event showcasing Charleston, SC’s Low Battery Restoration Project as a prime example of excellence in engineering and public works. The event will include remarks from Congressman Jim Clyburn and Charleston Mayor William S. Cogswell, Jr., along with executives from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). For those not in the area, the Roadshow stop will be live-streamed on the Internet and watched on the ACEC homepage and at www.infrastructureroadshow.org.
Charleston’s Low Battery was constructed as part of a large land reclamation project undertaken in two phases from 1909 to 1919. Over time, the Battery, which protects much of the city’s historic urban shoreline from flooding, withstood numerous severe storms and hurricanes and suffered from natural erosion from the elements. So, in 2004, a “Seawall Evaluation and Study” was prepared, and in May 2015, ACEC member firm Johnson, Mirmiran and Thompson (JMT) began the surveying work necessary to collect data needed to accurately assess and design the new seawall. A new city initiative was introduced during the design phase, which required new city projects with a design life of 50-plus years to account for an anticipated sea level rise of 2.5 feet. The project was split into four initial phases and is currently in its final stage of construction.
The Engineering and Public Works Roadshow will spotlight the Low Battery Restoration Project as an example of resilient engineering to combat a changing climate that will bring about more severe weather events.
Speakers at the event will include:
- Charleston Mayor William S. Cogswell, Jr.
- District Eight Councilmember Michael Seekings
- Congressman Jim Clyburn
- Patrick Ripton, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
- National and state leaders from ACEC, APWA, and ASCE
- Engineering and construction firms working to complete the Low Battery project
This event marks the latest Engineering and Public Works Roadshow stop, which began in 2022. The Roadshow is a joint project of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) that aims to spotlight impactful engineering and public works projects nationwide, promoting infrastructure investment and attracting the next generation of professionals to the industry.
