Mr. Travia has over 30 years of experience in the transportation and highway engineering field. He is currently the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Director of Highways Project Implementation and Chief Engineer; located in IDOT’s Central office, Springfield, Illinois.

Assigned to his current position in 2021, Mr. Travia monitors district programs to ensure statewide uniformity of policy interpretation and compliance and to certify program coordination with federal, state and local agencies.

The Office of Highways Project Implementation consists of eight bureaus and the highway regional offices.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Travia was IDOT’s Region One Project Implementation Engineer. He oversaw the implementation of Region One’s highway improvement program through the bureaus of Construction, Materials, Local Roads and Streets, and Contract Compliance with a staff of over 300.

Previously Mr. Travia served as the IDOT Region One Engineer of Operations, overseeing the Bureaus of Traffic and Maintenance and with a staff of approximately 600 full time employees and approximately 500 full time seasonal workers. Mr. Travia was accountable for planning, directing, and coordinating all maintenance, traffic, and electrical activities in Region One.

In 2006 Mr. Travia was selected as IDOT Region One Bureau Chief of Traffic. In this role, Mr. Travia was accountable for planning, directing and coordinating the Bureau of Traffic activities including design, installation, operation and maintenance of traffic control device programs, issuance of access permits,
and operation of the Emergency Traffic Patrol.
