Dodge Momentum Index Drops in July; Institutional Sector Takes Bigger Hit

The Dodge Momentum Index dropped 4.6 percent in July to 138.9, down from the revised June reading of 145.6. The Momentum Index, issued by Dodge Data & Analytics, measure the first report for nonresidential building projects in planning each month and has been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year.

The lower reading for the Momentum Index in July was due to a 10.2 percent decline in the institutional segment. The commercial segment dipped just 0.3 percent.

The Momentum Index is down 11.6 percent from its peak in July 2018, with the commercial segment off by 17.4 percent and institutional segment down 1.8 percent. The decline has been relatively gradual in recent months, with the July number down only 1.2 percent from December 2018.
