CASE recognizes that the International Building
Code or other governing codes do not address all aspects of structural
engineering and design. Often, the most common issues where the owners, or the
contractor or the design team are not aligned deal with what is not clearly
addressed by the various codes or design guidelines. This is the first in a
series of “Beyond the Code” white papers that will attempt to collate design
considerations that need to be discussed with the owners at the beginning of a
project to establish a clear Basis-of-Design for the project. By proactively
bringing up the design consideration in front of the owners, the Structural
Engineer can set up realistic expectations and discuss the cost impact of
alternative designs.
This first white paper in the “Beyond the
Code” series will discuss the pros and cons between two structural design
options for the grade level floor in expansive soil regions.
