Road Travel Set Mileage Record In 2018
Total U.S. vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reached a record-setting 3.225 trillion in 2018–an increase of 12.2 billion miles compared to 2017–according to the Federal Highway Administration. For the fifth year in a row, VMT topped 3 trillion.
FHwA reported that cargo and delivery services are at record levels. The Freight Transportation Services Index was 2.9 percent higher at the end of 2018, compared to 2017 and 9.8 percent higher compared to 2016.
“Record-setting vehicle-miles traveled reflects a robust economy, lower gas prices and is another reason to ensure that America’s roads and bridges are well-maintained and modernized to improve safety,” said U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao in a statement.
Despite the rise in VMT, traffic fatalities have decreased, falling about 3.1 percent in the first part of 2018.
