U.S. Army Corps Plans to Strengthen Flood Control Along Missouri River

In the wake of the record-breaking flooding this spring in states along the Missouri River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking to strengthen the flood control system along the river.

According to EE&E News, the Corps plans to realign the levees along the Missouri and expand or build new systems, including floodways, easement, and retention basins.

Realigning the levees would entail moving and reshaping them to better control flood waters. In order to expand flood control systems or build new ones, the Corps will have to work with communities along the river to access or acquire land.

AccuWeather estimates that the flooding of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers has caused $12.5 billion. The flooding in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri was caused by heavy rain and warm temperatures that melted the snowpack.
