ACEC Awards Minuteman Fund Grant to ACEC/Ohio To Push for Transportation Funding

ACEC/Ohio will use a Minuteman Fund grant to advocate for increased state transportation funding.

ACEC/Ohio is a founding member of the FOR (Fix Our Roads) Ohio coalition, which represents over 40 organizations of business, local government and transportation industry leaders. This broad-based group seeks to educate Ohio citizens and policymakers on the critical needs of the state’s transportation infrastructure.

At 28 cents/gallon, Ohio’s motor fuel users’ fee is in the bottom half among the states and one of the lowest in the Midwest. Since the state gas tax was last increased in 2005, its buying power has decreased by almost 36 percent. At the same time, construction costs have increased by 52 percent.

Additionally, state funding for roads and bridges is decreasing by $250 million on average per year, due to the conclusion of the Ohio Turnpike bonding program.

FOR Ohio is calling for a dedicated source to fund long-term investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure. The group has offered a package of revenue-raising options, including raising the state’s motor fuel users’ fee (gas tax) and indexing it to inflation, levying an alternative fuel vehicle fee, identifying a dedicated funding source for public transit, and researching other funding sources given the projected long-term decline in the use of petroleum-based fuels.
